Space scientist uses paper to solve engineering puzzle!

Koryo Miura, a Japanese astronomer and origami expert has solved an engineering puzzle that had aerospace engineers stumped. The challenge: to pack an enormous pair of solar energy panels into a tiny space aboard a satellite. He used his knowledge of origami to create a folding pattern which allows the panels to unfold and refold using only two motors.

His solution has been adapted as an ingenious map folding solution that enables a broadsheet format map to be folded and refolded into a tiny package. You simply pull on the two ends of the package to unpack it. Push the ends together to refold it.

Koryo Miura is now famous in two very different worlds and his folding pattern has been christened the Miura-ori in his honour by the British Origami Society.
